SMART Center Profiled in DOL CareerOneStop Case Study
The SMART Center was chosen to be featured in a U.S. Department of Labor Career One Stop case study. In 2013 SMART Center PI & Executive Director Barbara Murray was selected to serve on an exclusive panel of 25 transportation experts from across the country to update and modify the DOL Employment and Training Administration Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) competency model. As a result of her work Maritime was included for the first time in the "Industry-Sector Technical Competencies."
The SMART Center Maritime Technologies DOL ETA case study highlights the Center's collaboration with industry employers to identify key competencies needed by maritime technicians and the ensuing development of the SMART Center's Maritime Technologies career pathway which is built on the registered apprenticeship model.
The SMART Center Maritime Technologies case study is part of the DOL's Career One Stop Competency Model Clearinghouse. The clearinghouse offers competency models across a wide range of industries. "My work on the TDL Competency Model modification panel reflects the larger, long-term work I have been doing through the Center to assist the industry overall in identifying the knowledge and skill needs of employers so effective partnerships can be formed with secondary and college-level educators to develop 21st century prepared technicians."
The DOL ETA competency models are used by educators, school systems, and colleges in developing curriculum and selecting materials, and by industry employers in creating training programs, identifying licensure and certification requirements, writing job descriptions, recruiting and hiring workers, and evaluating employee performance.
