New "Make the SMART Choice" Video Shows how Maritime Offers Step to Great, Stable Careers
The SMART Center has released a new installment in its "Make the SMART Choice" video series showing how today's maritime industry employers are offering workers a great pathway into stable, great-paying careers. The video tells the story of how Auxiliary Systems Inc., a marine equipment repair firm in Norfolk, gave Billy Erwin, who had spent two years in prison for drug offenses, and David Tong, a refugee from Vietnam, the chance to prove they could succeed in the company’s rigorous registered apprentice program. They did, not only earning academic and industry-valued credentials, the nationally-recognized DOL Journeyman card and an Associates degree from Tidewater Community College, but also quick promotions into supervisory roles. Hear their uplifting stories, and why company management believes apprenticeships are the best option to recruit the next generation of tradespeople.
