SMART Maritime and Transportation Institute

The SMART Center's Maritime Transportation Institute (SMTI) is a professional development model created to engage frontline secondary and college-level STEM and CTE educators, guidance counselors, career coaches, and community college faculty. 

The purpose of the Institute is to:
·  increase participant knowledge of maritime and transportation careers and pathways for students to enter this industry
·  identify, develop, and expand industry career pathways
·  expand the SMART Center repository of information, industry data, andUSCG Yard
professional resources
·  provide participants with networking opportunities to develop relationships
with industry professionals who can help support their efforts to expand maritime and transportation career awareness in their classrooms, schools, and school systems

Participants spend 5-7 days in an immersive experience where they:
...hear directly from industry leaders
...tour industry sites including ports, marinas, shipyards, Naval bases
...interact with current technicians including recent high school graduates and community college students
...participate in PBL collaborative activities
...create models for future replicable material, competitions, and curriculum

2016 Summer Institute Schedule


The 2016 Institute application period has now ended. We are thrilled to have had 92 high-level candidates apply for our 3 Institutes and look forward to what the accepted applicants will create to benefit students and peers as a result of their involvement.

Anne Arundel          San Jacinto      TCC

June 26 - July 1, 2016: Pasadena, Texas (in conjunction with SMART Partner San Jacinto College)

July 10 - July 15, 2016: Norfolk, Virginia (in conjunction with SMART Partner Tidewater Community College)

July 17 - 22, 2016: Baltimore, Maryland (in conjunction with SMART Partner Anne Arundel Community College)

Who should attend: Secondary school STEM & CTE teachers, faculty, administrators, guidance counselors, as well as 2- and 4-year college faculty, administrators, and career coaches. Industry professionals involved in community and educational outreach are also welcome to attend.
